You were created for a purpose.
There’s nothing like Biology 101 to make you feel like a flat-earther. That’s how I felt anyways during a study group after a lecture on the theory of evolution. We were looking at a diagram of bird wings. The text was saying how evolution was demonstrated in the similarities between the wing structures. It was my turn to talk. I could go along with the theory or mention how it looked to me that all the birds had the same Creator.
This was early in my college experience, so I chose to share my creationist views. Someone chuckled. Others exchanged glances.
I don’t think it’s my job to convict anyone of anything. After a few other instances of sharing the POV of Creation, I decided to stop bringing it up. I’m not sure if that is what I should have done. Perhaps it was cowardly. Probably. But it is what I chose to do.
As the lecture hours passed, I listened to my peers learn about God’s handiwork as a mere accident. A lucky series of events. They spoke with such confidence about the way the world came to be. As if the perfect order and beauty and might all around us just happened.
While I was silent, I grew weary. And lonely. No one knew who I was because no one knew my Father.
Let me in your study group!
Have you found yourself in this situation? If so, let me be the one to say, “We are created beings. Isn’t that wonderful!”
Let me remind you of what you already know. God formed Adam and Eve with His own two hands. He breathed life into them. He knit you together in your mother’s womb. The same God who spoke the mountains and oceans and plains together calls you His Creation.
Your heavenly Father knows your thoughts and your worries. He feels the knot of anxiety in your chest. He sees the tears you shed in the darkness. His knowledge of you is incomprehensible. Your existence isn’t the result of a big bang or microbes in a puddle. You are not a sophisticated monkey.
You are God’s creation. And you live in a fallen but created world. God’s handiwork is all around us. It is such a joy to study it! And that’s what science is – thinking God’s thoughts after Him. That’s how my pastor always put it.
That phrase would echo in my brain during all those hours of study. I was glad I had such a simple phrase to repeat to myself. No one around me was mentioning God.
I think it would require more effort to believe that the order, rhythm, and beauty of this world just happened. The more I learned about our kidneys, photosynthesis, and the dreaded Krebs’s cycle, the more I was amazed by our Creator. And the more I thought, “How little we understand of this world!”
Your Creator Knows Your Need
A common response to a challenging or confusing time in life is, “Well, life doesn’t come with an instruction manual.” But I beg to differ. We are created beings, and our Creator did not bring us into existence for us to flounder about.
So, what are we supposed to do in this life?
Here is where something called vocation comes in. If you’re not familiar with that word, in a secular view it is equivalent to occupation. But in a religious view, it means honoring God in whatever you do. Further, God works through you. In whichever way you labor; a student, a doctor, a waitress, a mom, a librarian, or a construction worker, God is at work.
Taking on this mindset relieves us of a burden that many college students carry – finding our “purpose” or our “passion”. We get caught up in the idea of “finding ourselves”. That pursuit can quickly turn into a narcissistic hobby. God gives us our purpose – honor Him by serving our neighbor. That is a purpose we can live everyday in such a long list of occupations that we need not stress about it.
A clear blueprint for mothers
And when we look at God’s design, we can see there a some clear ways in which we can honor him and let Him work through us.
Specifically, I’ll address God’s design for moms and babies. Throughout my education, I saw examples of how the further we move from God’s design, the more pain and sickness result.
If you hope to be a mom someday, let me tell you about how God designed you so perfectly to care for your baby. For example, breastfeeding is the top choice for feeding your baby. Some benefits include:
- Provides all the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months of life
- Provides your baby with antibodies to fight off sickness
- Changes in composition as your baby grows to meet it’s needs
- Skin to skin time calms baby
- Reduces mom’s risk of some health conditions
A quick Google search will result in much more in depth information than what I will provide here. (I’m a fan of Erica Komisar and Suzanne Venker).
God intended mothers to be with their babies. While I don’t think you’ll run into many people saying “It’s bad for a mother and baby to always be together.” You will certainly be surrounded by the reality that so many mothers return to work and leave their baby in the care of someone else. This is just “what you do”. The common thought is that mothers shouldn’t have to give up their career for babies.
But God’s design so clearly says otherwise. He created you and your baby. He knows what both mother and child need and designed you to stay together for a long time.
If motherhood is in your future, remember you are a created being, and your Creator knows you. He has given you your purpose. When you have a child, that purpose is literally right in front of you. All that baby needs is you. Be there.
